Speaker
Joann Wortham RN, MSN, JD, CPHRM - Health System Clinical Risk Mgr, UCLA, Paul D’Aquila RN, Esq., CPHRM - Health System Litigation Director, UCLA
Description
Inequity and racial bias in healthcare are ongoing realities that demand our attention. While most research duly focuses on patient experience and outcomes, leadership and risk management must also assess the work environment. Healthcare providers, who are already under enormous stress, deserve this consideration. As such, organizations should take a closer look at risk mitigation strategies that address discriminatory practices in the workplace. This recording highlights the importance of maintaining clear anti-discrimination policies and practices in the clinical setting, particularly for medical providers and staff that attempt to balance prejudice versus patient choice issues. Legal cases are examined in this recording focusing on best practices for policy, protocol, documentation, and risk assessment related to discriminatory conduct events (DCE). Special considerations for patients lacking capacity and transgender case law are discussed along with risk mitigation strategies to avoid EPL claims. Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider number 12205 for 1 contact hour.
