Crossing the Abyss: Applying Human Factors Analysis to Prevent Medical Errors and Patient Harm

Ellen Evans, MSN, MPH, RN, CPHQ, CJCP, CPPS, CPHFH

Ellen has been a nurse for almost 40 years now. After spending several years as a bedside nurse, Ellen became a nurse manager for 9 years over 86 acute-care medical-surgical beds. During graduate school, Ellen fell in love with the concept of quality improvement.  The last 26 years of her career have been in the field of Quality Improvement. Starting her quality improvement career in the role of medical staff peer review, Ellen moved to the arena of patient safety when that became a focus in this country.

Her hospital was one of the hospitals to participate in the IHI 100,000 lives initiative. She interacts regularly with accreditation and state/ federal surveyors and inspectors and is very knowledgeable on the topic of standards and compliance. In addition to her CPHQ and CJCP, she has certifications in both Patient Safety (CPPS) and Human Factors in Healthcare (CPHFH). She has presented at multiple national conferences encompassing AMSN, AORN, NAHQ, Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Research Congress and Alaska Hospital and Healthcare Association meetings.

Description

This program will introduce the concepts of Human Factors and utilize case studies to identify potential mechanisms to prevent medical errors and patient harm from occurring.  Applying Human Factors analysis is critical for making patient care safer, both for the patients and the staff.  Join us to learn more about the importance of Human Factors and how we can apply it in the healthcare setting.

At the end of the webinar, the participant should be able to:

  1. Apply Human Factors Analysis in event analysis.
  2. Identify specific actions to take to impact Human Factors in the current workplace setting.
  3. Evaluate areas where implicit bias can influence Human Factors application.
